  2. The Vedic Age • 1500-500 BCE • Vedas- religious texts that are our main source of information

  3. Varna • Literally “color” but came to mean class • When they divided the original Man into how many parts did they divide him? What was his mouth, what were his arms, what were his thighs, and his feet called? The Brahman was his mouth, of his arms was made the warrior. His thighs became the vaisya, of his feet the sudra was born.

  4. Jati and Karma • Jati- birth groups or castes • Each had proper occupation, duties, rituals • Karma- deeds • Depending on your karma you could be reborn into a higher/lower class

  5. Jainism and Buddhism • 700 BCE • Reactions against Brahmin • Moksha- liberation, release from reincarnation

  6. Jainism • Holiness of all life • Strict non-violence • Zealous would starve to death

  7. Buddhism • Siddhartha Gautama (563-483 BCE) • Four Noble Truths • Life is suffering • Suffering arises from desire • The solution to suffering is curbing desire • Desire can be curbed if a person follows the “Eightfold path”

  8. Buddhism • Nirvana-release from cycle • Bodhisattvas- people who had come to nirvana, but have chosen to be reborn to help others reach nirvana • Mahayana- “Great Vehicle” new features, popular in East Asia • Theravada- “Teachings of Elders” original teachings, popular in Southeast Asia

  9. Hinduism • Came to be most popular religion in India • Combined Vedic, Dravidian, and even Buddhist aspects • Less sacrifice • Multiplicity of Gods • Direct contact with Gods and individuals
