  5. Pavement Smoothness Performance • A total of 31 states participated • 12 high-performing states identified • Five agency best practices and four contractor best practices

  6. Highway Safety Performance • Using national safety statistics to identify top-performing management strategies • Final report is due in May 2009

  7. Lessons Learned • It can be done! • Common definitions are a must • States do benefit from comparative performance measures • Comparative performance measures can identify best practices

  8. Next Steps • Continue monitoring and refining the first three sets of comparative performance measures. • Continue to spotlight best practices among high-performers. • Launch more comparative performance measures.
