  5. How can I find a fiction book? • Fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name • Fiction books include: • Easy (picture books) • Easy Readers • Fiction (chapter) books

  6. Alphabetical order • Which author comes first? • Cleary, Beverly or Brown, Marc • Can you put these names in ABC order? • Brett • Blume • Brown

  7. How can I find a non-fiction book? • Non-fiction books are arranged in number order by the Dewey Decimal System • There are 10 categories in the Dewey Decimal System • Books on the same subject are together in the same area or number

Examples of a call number • Non-fiction book about dinosaurs • 567.9 SAT (567.9 is the number for dinosaurs and SAT is for Sattler, the author’s last name) • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkeban by J.K. Rowling • FIC ROW • Arthur’s Teacher Trouble by Marc Brown • E BRO (this is a picture book)

  14. How do I find a book’s call number? • Ask the library clerk to look it up for you during independent time. • You must know the title or author’s name.

  15. Library Media Center Scavenger Hunt • Go to the fiction or picture book section. Find an author’s name that begins with the same letter as your last name • Library clerk has scavenger hunt cards with call numbers • Fiction and Easy (picture books) • Non-Fiction
