  2. Why Explore? • 5 Minute Brainstorm.. • What are reasons that lead nations and/ or people to explore the unknown?

  3. Why Explore? • Europe experienced a time of “rebirth” called the Renaissance. • Navigation improved enough to make long voyages. • Trade with Asia was difficult across hostile lands. • A search to control new trade routes brought explorers to America.

  4. First Contact • Christopher Columbus (Spain) lands at Hispaniola in 1492. • He hoped to find gold and spices from Asia but instead returned to Spain with slaves. • Trade winds and the Gulf Stream helped speed the voyage across the Atlantic from Europe to America and back.

  5. Spain’s Explorers • Spanish conquistadors (conquerors) came looking for gold and slaves. • The three “G’s” – God, Glory, & Gold • Spain wanted to convert Natives to Christianity, they wanted fortune and fame…Gold, Gold, Gold. • Hernando de Soto –first European explorer in Georgia in 1539 in search of Gold. • Diseases brought by Hernando and his men caused the end of the Mississippian culture.

  6. Spanish Missions • Spanish missions were built along Georgia’s coast to keep the French away and establish Christianity with the Natives

  7. Hernando de Soto • Landed in Florida with about 600 men to explore for gold. • Traveled across Georgia, the Carolinas and west to the Mississippi River. • Battles with the natives reduced them to 300 men when they returned. • Hernando de Soto was killed and gold was never found. • Journals of the expedition provided information on Native Indian culture.

  8. Left Hand Page 18 Hernando de Soto’s exploration through Georgia. Be sure to complete the Spanish established missions on back – two pictures (colored)

  9. France’s Explorers • France secretly started a colony to compete with Spain. • Jean Ribault and Rene De Laudonnieresettled a group near the GA/FL border in 1564 at Fort Caroline. • The French settlers were protestants called Huguenots who did not get along with the catholic Spanish. • Spain discovered and destroyed the fort killing most of the settlers. • Jean Ribault died on a beach in Florida. • The French left and settled the interior of North America.

  10. Left Hand Page 20 • Create a Promotional Flyer to convince people in France to join Ribault in his journey. • Why should you go? (3 reasons) • Who will I be going with? Ribault/Laudionairre • Where will I be going? Paris Island/Georgia-Florida border-Fort Caroline

  11. England’s Exploration • By the end of the 1500s, the conflict between Spain and England turned into a war at sea. • English captured treasure ships & burned Spanish settlements. • “invincible Armada” was destroyed by the English. • England gained control of the seas and was ready for the New World.

  12. British Colonies in North America - 1600s the English began permanent settlements. • Jamestown, VA (1607) was the first permanent settlement. • By the end of the 1600s –England had established 12 colonies along the coast. • In 1721, Fort King George was completed; showing the English presence in Georgia.

  13. Left Hand Page 22 • Create a multi-flow map of the English Exploration. • Causes that led to their success. • Must be neat and colorful.

  14. The Rise of Mercantilism • England had many colonies around the world. • They controlled the colonies trade and raw materials (resources) • England turned the raw materials into manufactured goods. • England exported goods back to the colonies and other countries. • This created large profits for English merchants. • Colonies are left with little profit and fewer resources.

  15. Example of Mercantilism“Triangle Trade” • Slaves were sent from Africa to Caribbean island sugar plantations. • The slaves grew and harvested sugar. • It was sent to New England colonies to be turned into rum. • Rum was shipped to Africa where it was traded for slaves. 5. English merchants made the profits.

  16. Left Hand Page 24 • Recreate the “Triangle Trade” • You need to include All three countries What is being traded Who (country) gives what? Who (country) gets what?
