  2. Introduction • MS & HS coaches in Columbia County began meeting collaboratively in August 2007 • Our goal was to begin the transition process early in the year for 8th graders

  3. Development of Pre-Freshman Seminars began, and was later renamed “Future Freshman Focus” • MSGC from feeder schools (LMS & RMS) to LHS were invited to join the School Improvement Team at the high school that focused on Transitions for Freshmen • High School SIT meets once a month with HSGC & both MSGC from feeder middle schools

  5. Our 8th Grade Student Responses • What is my schedule? • Where is my locker? • How do I navigate the lunch line? What is important to your students?

  7. Our 8th Grade Student Responses Finding their friends at lunch and finding a place to sit! How can we help our students find acceptance and a sense of belonging in an unfamiliar place?

Future Freshman Focus Seminar #1October 2007 • HSGC from both high schools presented a PPT program and question/answer session with all 8th graders • Focus was an overview of high school, important high school vocabulary, explanation of credits and brief review of the newly approved graduation requirements for rising Freshmen

  12. Future Freshman Focus Seminar #2November 2007 • Get to know your High School Graduation Coach • Discussion and workshop of the importance of completing homework and the detrimental impact zeroes will have on your grade

Future Freshman Focus Seminar #3January 2008 • HSGC brought students from the HS to make presentation at the middle schools • HS students gave advice about making the most of the second semester of 8th grade, as well as tips on doing well in high school • Students were also able to give first hand information about the difficulty of recovering credits

  14. Future Freshman Focus Seminar #4March 2008 • HSGC will present a refresher on earning credits in high school • MSGC & HSGC will explain the differences in report cards from middle school to high school • Students will examine a high school schedule and learn how to read it

  15. Future Freshman Focus Seminar #5May 2008 • Celebrate a successful year • Invite students to attend the Panther Academy summer institute to prepare for high school and learn about • lockers • schedules • class location • lunch information • and other necessities of high school
