  1. Article of the Week (AoW) Weekly Nonfiction Homework Assignment

  2. What is an article of the week? • An AoW is a nonficiton relatively current article that will give you more real world experience with a wide variety of nonficiton texts, author’s styles.

  3. Why will we be doing AoWs? • To help build your prior knowledge about the real world.

  4. What do I have to do with the article? • You have to be honest with the article. • Do a close read of the article. • Mark it up with • Your opinion • Your confusion • Write a reflection to internalize what you've read. • How do I do that?

  5. How do I do that? Interact with the text !!!

  6. AoW - Step 1 • Read the article marking it up for anything that is confusing in any way. • What the heck does that mean? • Where the heck is that? • Who the heck is that? • What the heck is one of those?

  7. AoW - Step 2 • Next, mark up the text with any/all of the READING STRATEGIES • Where you highlighted confusion, clearly a question could be written. • However, any of the reading strategies could be employed for each paragraph.

  8. AoW - Step 3 • Then, answer the follow up questions if there are any

  9. AoW - Step 4 • Read the article again. • This time read it straight through.

  10. AoW - Step 5 • Finally, • Write a 1+ page personal opinion reflection where you express your position on (or reaction to) the topic presented in the article.

  11. Where do I get an AoW from? • You will pick up a new article every week near the door. • Every FRIDAY AS you WALK in the door for class. • To the appropriate tray near the door to class. When do I turn in an AoW? Where do I turn in an AoW?
