  1. Advantages of Fat Biking

  2. Introduction The year was 1999, when fat bikes first appeared on the market at the Inter-bike trade show in Alaska as reported in Adventure Cycling. First modeled as a way to get around in the snow and ice, now they are used in a variety of “off road” conditions, such as sand, mud, and dirt. The modern fat bike has typically 3.8 inch (97 mm) wheels with rims of 2.16 inches (55mm).

  3. Celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jimmy Fallon have both shown interest in the fat biking craze that has been taking North America by storm. Another reason to fall in love with the fat bike is to pump up your cardio routine and relieve your mental stress. Some say that fat biking is the modern day equivalent to cross country skiing, and that surfing through the wilderness in full suspension madness is like yoga for the soul.

  4. Table of contents • What are the advantages of Fat Biking? • How Fat Bikes are looking in the future • How the Fat Bike will ease your mind • The rules of the fat bike universe

  5. What are the advantages of Fat Biking? Known commercially as “the go anywhere bike,” fat bikes offer more stability which allows you to be more adventurous. In soft conditions, fat bike riding can burn a whopping 1500 calories an hour. If you are into cross training, fat biking can also be a nice cool down exercise to cross country skiing.

  6. Fat bikes will allow exploration of terrain not capable on foot. The fat bike is built to be great on snow and ice conditions such as in Antarctica. Fat Bike expeditions to the South Pole have been lead by many explorers since around 2012. Fat Bikes can also be used in deserts, bogs, and muddy terrain. This bike will quite literally go anywhere except the moon—but who knows what the future may hold?

  7. How Fat Bikes are looking in the future. There are currently two types of fat bike rider, the commuter and the racer. Fat Bikes used in competitive events have expanded the market. Growing popularity of these bikes have trickled into the commuter market. As people become more health conscience, they are seeking more ways to become physically active.

  8. One way that fat bike manufacturers have innovated this trend toward commuter bikes is to create folding fat bikes that can easily be moved in small spaces like trains and busses. Manufacturers are even finding ways to integrate smart phones to fat bikes, so that you can use GPS technology or stream music.

  9. Fat bike manufacturers are also using more light weight materials such as carbon fibre to build the frames. This, along with an increasing consumer conscience to be more eco-friendly in buying choices will catapult the fat bike industry to mainstream success. As cities are now more congested than ever, people are looking for ways to free the environment from the stress of pollution.

  10. How the Fat Bike will ease your mind Exercise for one has been a long used stress reliever, experiencing what some call a “runner’s high.” Exercise produces endorphins, and endorphins, experts say, make people feel good. One of the benefits of fat biking, is that it can be done alone or in a group. There are Mountain Biking Groups across Canada like the Walden Mountain Bike Club in Sudbury, Ontario. These clubs often have dedicated trail systems to be explored alone or in a group ride.

  11. There is even a Global Fat Bike ride day, every year in Saskatchewan. Fat Bike riders form a community of people that want to get out and explore the outdoors. Most people find the stress busting benefits of being in the outdoors for as little as 30 minutes to outweigh the option of not doing anything. Coming up with a funky name for the fat bike team is a bonus.

  12. The rules of the fat bike universe There are some basic etiquette to consider before going on an adventure. The first is the question of leaving ruts in the road. Best practice for all riders is to just not leave any and turn around. A rut in the road could become a danger for the next person who rides the trail.

  13. Some in the fat bike world say, to use the appropriate tire width to suit the weight of the person, and no less than 3.8 inches. Use the appropriate air pressure to suit the conditions.

  14. The number one rule is to simply get out there and have fun. Fat biking has been proven to be a stress busting activity that is also great exercise. Innovations in light weight materials and technology are making fat bikes a fitness trend that is here to stay. Fat bikes just might be the answer to the common commuter problem of traffic jams.
