Economic Aspects • Created many trading deals with countries: Japan & Britain • (In Russia) she instituted the Assignation Bank, issuing the 1st paper money of the government • Catherine established the free economic society to encourage the modernization of agriculture and industry • Catherine encouraged foreign investment in economically underdeveloped areas • Catherine relaxed the censorship law

Economic Aspects • Among her economic measures were the establishment of the Loan Bank, the reduction of the burdensome salt tax, and the encouragement of the Free Economic Society • The Free Economic Society was founded through private initiative for the dissemination of information about agriculture.

Religious • Was indifferent to religion • Disallowed dissenters from building churches • Disallowed exploiting Christianity though her anti-Ottoman policy extremely affected the religious views of Russia at the time

Social Aspects • Catherine professed a belief that every Russian subject had to have a religion but it did not necessarily have to be Russian Orthodox Christianity • Catherine the great’s religion was Lutherin but then her new religion was Russian Orthodox Christianity • She changed her religion because of marrying her husband Peter III

Interesting Facts: • Changed name from Sophia Frederica to Catherine the Great- because she got married to her cousin when they were both 11 • Catherine didn’t even like her cousin-would do anything for her parents • Born May 2 1729- Germany, Died November 17 1796 • Husband’s name=Peter the Great (not her cousin) • On December 25, 1761 Catherine became Empress • Catherine was grossly FAT (true in itself)
