  2. What is Junior Great Books? • A program designed around engaging literature that focuses on extending student thinking • Students are encouraged to form and respond to interpretive questions • The instruction for each text culminates with a Shared Inquiry Discussion

  3. JGB: What is Shared Inquiry? • After multiple readings of the text and a variety of instructional activities, students come together to explore the meaning of the piece of literature. • They share their insights (rooted in textual evidence) and respond to each others’ ideas.

  4. What is Daily 5? • A structure that helps students develop reading, writing, and vocabulary independently. • Focuses on choices and student direction. • Enables the teacher to work effectively with small groups while other students work on meaningful tasks.

  5. How do JGB and Daily 5 fit together? • Both of these instructional designs encourage student independence and student “choice.” • JGB teacher editions include aspects which fit with Daily 5: • Vocabulary instruction (Word Work) • Writing extensions (Work on Writing) • Directed Notes (Read to Someone or Self)

  6. How to Start JGB • Find the resources your school may have! • Many schools have JGB sets and teacher editions from the early 1990s. • The AIG department purchased new editions last year which can be checked out from ADR. • Ask someone who went to last year’s training!

  7. Practice Session • Pre-reading • Have you ever apologized for something and said it was an accident? • First Read • Write down a question you have or something that seems important in the poem. • Second Read (Directed Notes) • S = Sorry • NS = Not Sorry

  9. Shared Inquiry Discussion • According to the poem, does the narrator regret eating the plums?

  10. Examples of Word Work • Students can research unfamiliar words. • Examples from the poem might include icebox, forgive, and delicious. • Other opportunities for word study: • compound words • Prefixes and suffixes • Synonyms and antonyms • Also see ideas in JGB teacher editions!

  11. Examples of Work on Writing • Students can write questions they have about the text and answer other student questions. • Students write about the stories using strategies from Daily 5 such as inferring, summarizing, identifying main idea, etc. • Your teacher Edition of JGB will have more ideas for writing as well.

  12. Conclusion • JGB and Daily 5 fit together as a framework for teaching literacy. • Both are aligned with Common Core Standards. The texts are rigorous and designed to require close reading. • JGB and Daily 5 actively engage students as well as utilize multiple intelligences. • Incorporates differentiation for all learners. • Best of all, kids love it!
