  13. OFFENDER REFERRAL CRITERIA • ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY • ACKNOWLEDGE ESSENTIAL FACTS • MINIMAL/NO CRIMINAL HISTORY • WILLING TO PARTICIPATE • OFFENCE MEETS RCMP CRITERIA - type of crime, attitude of offender, accountability • VICTIM AGREES TO PROCESS

  14. PARTICIPATION • The victim(s) will be contacted to determine willingness to participate To be successful, the restorative justice process needs all parties involved in the crime to participate in the process.

  15. TEAM ASSIGNED A CONFERENCE TEAM WILL BE ASSIGNED THE PROCESS MOVES FORWARD

  16. PRE-CONFERENCES Conference team will meet with parties to: • Review the restorative justice process & guidelines • Hear the participant’s story and their concerns • Encourage participation • Answer any questions

  17. COMMUNITY JUSTICE FORUM • A meeting of all participants • Opportunity to speak without interruption. • Neutral and safe location • Work toward a satisfactory conclusion.

  20. COMPARISON Using the same scenario: Rachel hits Joshua with a skateboard causing soft tissue injury that requires healing and physiotherapy. The assault follows on the heels of Joshua bullying Rachel’s younger sister of facebook, falsely accusing her of stealing his girlfriend’s cell phone and making threats against her. The same case going through the court system is plea bargained down to simple assault with probation and community service.

  25. CONCLUSION COMMUNITY JUSTICE FORUMS PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL PARTIES TO COMMUNICATE. THEY ARE QUICK, MONITORED, AND EACH PARTICIPANT IS PART OF THE SOLUTION. IT WORKS AND MANY BELIEVE THIS IS TRULY JUSTICE.
