  5. Geography and land • “land of long white cloud” • 新西兰------绵长白云之国 • Situated in the southwest Pacific Ocean, 2000 kilometers from north to south • In size, New Zealand is similar to Japan or the British Isles with a land area of 270 500 square kilometers

  6. The North Island has been formed mainly by volcanoes, some of which are still alive.

  7. The Southern Alps runs almost the full length of the South land.

  8. Unique flora and fauna: no land mammals except bat until 1000 years ago.

  9. The capital city, Wellington is the southernmost and windiest national capital in the world.

  10. Environmental issues • The Resource Management Act (1991 资源管理法案) • Individuals and their local authorities reduce waste and recycle their rubbish.

  11. The New Zealanders • 4.351million in January 2010. New Zealand is lightly populated with an average of 4 people to a square kilometer. • Most New Zealanders live in cities and towns, and about 75% live in the North Island. • New Zealanders with European ancestry, Maori and people from the Pacific Islands • New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the right to vote.(1893)

  12. Maoritanga • Maoritanga means “Maori culture” • One in seven people identify themselves as New Zealand Maori.

  13. The best known internationally of all Maori traditions is the Haka.

  14. History • New Zealand was settled over 1000 years ago by voyagers from East Polynesia. • British settlers arrived in the 1840s and 1850s, establishing towns and clearing land for farms.

  15. James Cook visited New Zealand in 1769 and claimed the land for the British.

  16. New Zealand today is a unique blend of South Pacific and European cultures with a national identity of its own.
