Location: Coastal vs Plateau Coastal Tribes Plateau Tribes Columbia river Canada Oregon Alaska Geography influenced were they lived because their ancestors were native to the plateau. • Puget sound beaches • Canada coasts • Alaska • Oregon Geography influenced their location because their ancestors were native to the coast.

Diets: Coastal vs Plateau Coastal Tribes Plateau Tribes Camas Dried meat Salmon Gathered Hunted Geography influenced what they ate because they had flat lands and some trees and bushes. • Oysters • Clams • Mussels • Salmon • Camas Geography influenced what they ate because of the land that surrounded them, like rivers and trees and bushes.

Housing: Coastal vs Plateau Coastal Tribes Plateau Tribes Pit houses Tule houses with wood structures Lean-to’s Geography influenced how they lived because they only had tulemats, little wood, and the earth to work with. • Longhouses • Huts made of tule • Mats covered the floor Geography influenced how they lived because of the materials that they had to work with.

Geography influenced what they wore because of the time, materials, and tools they had. • Waterproof skirts • Barefoot • Poncho-ish capes • Tightly woven waterproof hats Geography influenced what they wore because of the materials and tools they had.

  7. Customs and Beliefs: Coastal vs Plateau Coastal Tribes Plateau Tribes Believed that everything had soul Leaders called shamans healed and recaptured souls of the sick and ill. Geography influenced their customs and beliefs because of what they’ve been passed on and told from their ancestors. • Traditional to make a totem pole representing each family • Believed that each picture made/carved told a story Geography influenced their customs and beliefs because of what they’ve been passed on from their ancestors.
