  1. Southern Flying SquirrelWinter Population vs. Hard Mast Production • 12 sites in southeast Ohio • Hard mast surveys conducted in September each year (8 sites 2013, 12 sites 2014) • Box checks done Oct-Feb 2012-2013 & 2013-2014

  2. Perry Morgan Pickaway Hocking Ross Athens Vinton Meigs Pike Jackson Scioto Gallia Lawrence

  3. Hard Mast Surveys • See summary sheet/technical paper for reference • If SFS box tree was oak, hickory, or walnut & >10” DBH, then sampled. If not, then found nearest oak, hickory, or walnut >10” DBH within 75 ft. If none…then no estimate made for that SFS box tree site • Either one person counted for 60 seconds or two people counted for 30 seconds (each had ‘half the tree canopy) using binoculars.

  4. Previous Slide/Graph • Of the 9 sites that were sampled both years • 2012 hard mast exceeded 2013 production on 8 of 9 sites (only Rio-URG-Gallia was greater in 2013—but not by much) • In most cases 2012 production (based on nuts per tree) was twice as great as 2013

  5. SFS Per Box Per Site VS. Mast Per Tree

  6. Statistics • Combining years: regression results were Y= 0.336 +0.018 (x) where Y = flying squirrels per box and x = mast per tree R2 = 0.07, P=0.236 (i.e., not statistically significant)
