  2. Objective • Today, our objective is to: • Determine the types of communication, evaluate them and identify and classify setting/place for each.

  3. Have you ever thought… • What would life be like without communication? • Article “The Feral Girl” • Read the article aloud in your group. Discuss possible answers, considering EVERYONE’s viewpoint.

  5. Formal & Informal • Formal: You can prepare ahead of time. • What situations can you think of? • Informal: You can’t prepare! Oh SNAP!

  6. 2 Types – Verbal & NonVerb. • 50-90% of comm’n is NON-verb. • Sometimes your verbal & non-verb contradict one another and create confusion. • Verbal: spoken & written words • Non-Verb: communication without words (well, duh)

  7. Non-verbal serves 4 functions: • To complement (agree with) verbal msgs. • To emphasize verbal msgs. • To replace verbal msgs. • To contradict verbal msgs.

  8. Here’s how this goes…

  9. Language is LEARNED • Children learn the lang. of their culture. • This is a BARRIER in Debate as American Standard English is the “norm”. It stinks, it’s not fair. It is what it is. • Language changes. Settee, chifferobe • Let’s check out what I’m talking about… • Take out a sheet of paper & WITHOUT talking, write down what you see (no talking!)

  11. Is that a bucket or a pail? • You are more likely to say “bucket” if you are from the South. Pail people are from the North.. • Ah.. But remember, your parents influence how you speak, as well as friends and teachers (pretty much everyone, TV, radio, etc…)

  12. What do you call these? • You see this machine in the cafeteria and you say “hey, I’m gonna’ go buy me a ______”

  15. How do you say? • Milk - “bring me a glass of milk” • Cement - “they are pouring some cement in that driveway” • Pillow - I have a nice, fluffy soft pillow • Caramel – I’d love to have a caramel sundae. • For – We’re having chicken nuggets for lunch today

  16. How do you say? • Nevada – I’m visiting my aunt in Nevada • Okay – how did you say AUNT? • Caribbean – I’m taking a Caribbean cruise this summer.

  17. Watch what you say! • There are dual meanings to a LOT of words (hence why we have PUNS) • There was a sign on the lawn at a drug rehab center that said 'Keep off the Grass'. • Two hats were hanging on a hat rack in the hallway. One hat says to the other, 'You stay here, I'll go on a head.’

  18. Other countries.. • The word “fag” has an entirely different meaning in England. It means a cigarette. • When Austin Powers the Spy Who Shagged Me came out in theatres in England, they had to change the name because Shag is the same as the F word… Can you imagine walking up to a theatre and seeing…

  20. In Japan • Coffee does not mean “hot” because coffee is served hot & cold there so you must specify hot or cold • That’s not so weird.. In the U.S. in the north there is no “sweet tea”. Order iced tea and it’s plain. In the south, it seems to be sweet (you ask for unsweet) or they ask you.

  21. Gestures… • Watch the gestures in other countries. It’s either “ok” or the thumbs up in Brazil is the same as giving the…

  22. Dialect • Dialect is a way of speaking that is characteristic of a particular region or group of people. • Speakers often use Colloquialisms which are local expressions (I reckon, Fo-Shizzle). Think about Jeff Foxworthy!

  23. Jeff Foxworthy… • Widja-dija. What’s that? • What’s a grudge? • Mayonnaise?

  24. More on English • Non-standard grammar is common where people say “they ain’t” or “they was” or “they be”, also called Ebonics • Created a lot of controversy • Standard American ENGLISH is what we study because it’s not the same as British English.

  25. It’s undeniable… • How you speak MATTERS and judgments are made, right or wrong. • Studies show the most disadvantaged groups, by speaking are: • African-Americans • Hispanics • Asian Have you ever been judged on your accent/way you speak?
