  2. History Established July 1, 1941. Became a World Heritage site on October 27, 1981. Attracts 597,934visitors annually . Human beings have explored it for 6,000 years.

  3. Formation Mammoth Cave developed in thick Mississippian-aged limestone strata capped by a layer of sandstone, making the system remarkably stable. Was formed around a million years ago.

  4. Location Located primarily in Edmonson Kentucky, with small areas extending eastward into Hart County and Barren County. It is centered around the Green River, with the Nolin River, feeding into the Green just inside the park. Central Kentucky.

  5. Size Mammoth Cave is the largest cave system in the world. The park is 52,835 acres. The cave system is 367 miles long and that is well over twice the length of the second largest cave system.

  6. Fun Facts The first superintendent was Robert P. Holland; September 2, 1936 – June 21, 1938. There are no remains of woolly mammoths. It is home to the endangered Kentucky cave shrimp, a sightless albino shrimp. Only one person has died exploring the cave.
