  15. 1. Culture Link: American Party Etiquette • At large, informal party among young people, it is acceptable for guests to bring a friend, even someone the hosts don't know. This would not be done at a dinner party, because the hosts need to know how many people will be eating there. If in doubt, a guest can call and ask if it is OK to bring someone. • At an informal party, guests tend to arrive 15-30 minutes after the time the party is supposed to begin. Many people try to avoid being the first guest to arrive, because it makes them feel shy or uncomfortable. Many guests leave when they see others starting to go home. To be polite, hosts will often press guests not to go home "so early", even if it is quite late and the host is actually very tired!
