  1. Story of the Week: Pet Tricks Weekly Theme: Pets September 2, 2013 Story Vocabulary Spelling/Decoding The following are story vocabulary words that will be covered in our reading selection this week. Please talk with your child about the meanings of these words and how they were used in the story. Since the meanings of these words are what are the most important to having your child understand the story, we will not be concen- trating on the spellings. Your child should be able to recognize the words by sight and know what they mean. The following are words that your child needs to learn how to spell. We refer to these words as Word Wall Words. These words occur often in what we will read this year, and they are words that your child will need to use in his/her writing. • come Dictation Sentence • good I can run and ride • read too. • that • the Words: Come, what, grab, down, frizz, trick, rope, kiss, need, living, things, seeds, plants, some, eat, meat, fresh, water, safe, home, care Academic Vocabulary The following words have patterns that we are studying this week. Please work with your student to see if he/she can make other words that have the same spelling patterns (the underlined portion) that he/she might remember when writing. These words refer to key concepts within the content areas of Language Arts, Math, Science or Social Studies. It is necessary for students to learn the meanings of these words as they are often used in weekly assessments. -ick family -ot family tot cannot dot forgot got mascot hot jackpot pot robot kick chopstick lick drumstick Nick homesick pick toothpick sick seasick • story structure (beginning, middle, end) • exclamation • numbers • unit/label Skill of the Week: Analyze Character and Setting
