  1. What is Blues? The blues is a musical genre which descended from call-and-response work songs sung by freed slaves after the Civil War. Blues lyrics often describe the hard lives of African-Americans in the rural south and later in the urban north. Throughout the early decades of this century blues songs expressed anger and frustration at the poverty and racial prejudice faced by African-Americans. Hyejung Yang

  2. What Blues… • ♫ Fundamental chord progression called 12 bar blues The blues chords associated to a twelve-bar blues are typically a set of three different chords played over a twelve-bar scheme. For instance for a blues in C, C is the tonic chord (I) and F the subdominant (IV).   4. What is Country Music? Country Music finds its roots deeply entwined with that of America’s roots. Much of the history of Country Music reflects the changing lives of American’s over several generations. Emerging from the Appalachians in the early 1920s, early Country Music artists put a twist of hillbilly sound on Folk Music and brought it out to the rest of the world. Hyejung Yang

The History of Country Music… • Country, the music of America's heartland, can be traced back to British Immigrants who brought with them a tradition of storytelling Celtic ballads and string-instrument playing, especially fiddling. • By the early 1900s "mountain music" - had separated into string band music -the beginnings of bluegrass and vocal harmony music derived from church music. • In the 20s country began reaching a wider audience due to the popularity of radio and recording and vocalists began dominating.
