Why did we want to do it? • Our departmental goal is to “Ignite creativity around the world” • It is the Year of the Innovator. • SUNY joined Courserain May 2013. • Shine the light on Buffalo State and community • SUNY’s Board of Trustees and Chancellor endorsed an ambitious vision for how SUNY might use open online courses to help students finish their degrees in less time, for less money. • Middle States Commission on Higher Education President is seeking to accredit MOOCs.

  3. What is the course about? • Based on existing undergraduate course • Focused on Everyday Creativity: • bAware – gaining knowledge in the field of creativity • bInspired – gaining insights to others’ examples of Everyday Creativity • bCreative – applying creativity

  4. How is the course run? • 6 modules over six weeks • Focuses on the Creative Person, Process, Press (environment) and product • Peer assessments • 40 5-minute video lessons • 40 5-minute inspirational videos from Buffalo State alumni, faculty, students and Community members

  5. Statistics • 24,193 participants • 83 signature track (paid participants) • 173 countries • One of four MOOCs in SUNY • Empire State College • Stony BrookUniversity • University of Albany

  6. Developing a MOOC • 2 Faculty Members • IR: Video Production • IR: Instructional Design Support • SUNY administration • Project Manager (sponsored by outside organization)

  7. Research agenda • Measure the impact on levels of creativity. • Explore the relationship between cognitive and writing style. • Measure perceptions of creative climate from various contexts. • Explore participant definitions of creative product. • Examine shifts in problem solving efforts throughout the course.

  8. What next? • Rework course to be on-demand in Coursera • Flip classrooms- taking content and using in the undergraduate course we teach • Gaining accreditation • Research publications • Conference Presentations
