  1. God’s PriestsThen and Now Lessons from Nadab and Abihu

  2. God’s Priests • All Christians are God’s priesthood today (1 Pet. 2:5,9; Rev. 1:6; 5:10; 20:6) • The priesthood has been changed (Heb. 7:12): the High Priest, the garments, the sacrifices, the days, the place, etc. What has not changed is the principle of offering to a holy God only what is authorized!

  3. God’s Priests Nadab and Abihu can teach us some lessons (Rom. 15:4; 1 Cor. 10:11) What started out as a day of blessing and fire, ended with punishment and fire (Lev. 9:24 - 10:3)

  4. God’s Priests Lessons About Authority • The sin of assumption, presumption, and of self-will … acting when God is silent • The sin of small things and “strange things” (Heb. zuwr; lit. another; strange to the law; see Ex. 30:9)

  5. God’s Priests Lessons About Authority The sin of partial obedience (censer, incense) and counterfeit religion (“strange” fire looks like fire); the sin of will-worship (Col. 2:23) People with privilege are still not allowed to do things unauthorized (Ex. 24:9-11)

  6. God’s Priests Lessons About Authority God is no respecter of persons; sin is sin; no exemptions; no exceptions; no “situation ethics” (Gal. 2:11)

  7. God’s Priests Lessons About Family • Parents must teach their children respect for Bible authority and proper worship (Rom. 4:3; Col. 3:17; 1 Pet. 4:11; Josh. 24:14; Jn. 4:24) • Parents must not be negligent like Eli (1 Sam. 2:12ff; 3:13)

  8. God’s Priests Lessons About Family • Godly parents can have ungodly children (Ezek. 18:5ff) • Family members will be judged individually by God (Rom. 14:12)

  9. God’s Priests Lessons About Family • Two brothers that started out right, ended up wrong (Gal. 5:13; 1 Pet. 2:16) • Serving the Lord comes before serving the family (Lev. 10:4-7; Mt. 10:34-37; Lk. 9:59-62; 14:25ff)

  10. God’s Priests Lessons About God God will be God God will be sanctified [set apart] and glorified [honored] by his people (Lev. 10:3; Num. 20:11-12)

  11. God’s Priests Lessons About God God will be Lord God will accept only what He authorizes - no more, no less, and nothing else (Num. 3:2-3; 26:60-61)

  12. God’s Priests Lessons About God • God will be Judge • God is not mocked (Gal. 6:8-9)

  13. God’s Priests • Serving God takes humble, reverent obedience; serving God is serious business; God is not to be trifled with (Heb. 12:28-29) • Serving God must be according to God’s will, not our will (Rom. 12:2; Eph. 5:17; 6:6; Heb. 10:36; 1 Jn. 2:17)
