  4. What will your child learn this year? • Learn to think like a scientist!! • Develop their own experiments • Plants, cells, and human body • Weather, oceans, and energy • At home science project 3rd quarter • Grow in their knowledge that science is an ongoing process that changes in response to new information and discoveries

  5. How will your child be graded? • Class work, labs, homework, tests, and Daily Science (science notebook) • Participation in class • Work not completed in class will be assigned as homework • Grades are available online

  6. A tool for scientists to record their thinking and their learning before, during and after a science investigation. Will need to bring this notebook everyday to class. Everything from science class will be pasted or taped into this notebook. Students are graded on their notebook. Work not completed in class may be Homework. Science Notebooks

  7. Science as Inquiry • Ongoing all year • Refers to the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and provide explanations based on evidence from their work • Questioning, planning, & conducting investigations • Using appropriate tools and techniques to gather data • Thinking critically and logically about relationships between evidence and explanations • Communicating results

  8. 1st Quarter • Science Skills and Inquiry • Design & conduct investigations • Plant Systems • Experiments with Plants • Cell Structure and Function • Structure & hierarchy of cells

  9. 2nd Quarter • Human Body Systems • How various systems work together to form vital functions • Scientific Method • Step-by-step process for conducting scientific inquiry

  10. 3rd Quarter • Science Project • Conduct a controlled investigation using the scientific method at home • Structure of the Earth • Earth’s atmosphere • Earth’s waters (oceans) • Water cycle • Earth’s weather

  11. 4th Quarter • Structure of the Earth - continues • Earth’s atmosphere • Earth’s waters (oceans) • Water Cycle • Earth’s weather • Energy • Renewable and non-renewable • Generated, stored, transferred, transformed • Conservation

  12. Science Project • 3rd quarter • In class • Design and conduct an experiment • Complete Power Point presentation • Give speech to class on experiment

  13. Scientist Wanted Poster • Your child will choose a famous scientist and create a wanted poster • The wanted poster will include details, pictures and an outline of information about their chosen scientist Albert Einstein WANTED FOR THEORY OF RELATIVITY

  14. If your child is absent • It is THEIR responsibility to come see me about what they have missed • Your child has one day to turn in work that they’ve missed unless approved by me otherwise the work is late and receives no credit

  15. Late work • Do homework when assigned • Have homework completed before you come into class • Late work receives partial or possibly no credit. It will show as missing on your progress report

  16. Donations for Science Labs & Activities • There is no money in the district for the consumables used in our labs this year. Examples • Bubble Gum Lab • Solar Ovens • Marshmallow Towers • We rely on donations from parents and families to help complete these labs. • Will send emails and notes home with your child when donations are needed. • Looking for business and corporate partners to help with our science needs as well.

  17. My hopes for this school year… • To guide every student to successfully challenge themselves • To encourage creativity • To challenge students to ask questions about the world around them! • To have every paper your child turns in have their NAME on it • To enjoy the learning process
