Richard Rodgers • June 28, 1902-Dec. 30, 1979 • Columbia University & the Julliard School • Collaborated with Lorenz Hart at the age of 16 on tunes such as “I’ll Take Manhattan,” “My Funny Valentine,” and “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.” • Rodgers & Hart wrote music and lyrics for 26 musicals.

  3. Oscar Hammerstein • July 12, 1895-August 23, 1960 • Columbia University • Began as a stage manager, which developed his love for theatre. • Librettist and lyricist

  4. R & H • Began collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein in 1943. • Blended styles of musical comedy (RR) with operetta (OH). • First hit, “Oklahoma.” – Pulitzer Prize winner

  6. R&H Trivia • Numerous awards including Pulitzer Prize, Tonys, Grammys, Oscars, Emmys • Shirley Jones (Carousel, Oklahoma) was the first and only actor to be under contract to R&H • RR’s daughter and grandsons are composers. • OH’s was a pre-law major at Columbia.
