  5. What if you have students with learning disabilities (LD)? RDS and students with learning disabilities • It is RDS’s job to determine if a student has a LD & what are reasonable accommodations • It is NOT your job to provide any accommodation not recommended by RDS • Bottom line: I send any student identifying themselves as LD to RDS, RDS provides me with a sheet with their professional recommendations. • I make my best effort to provide what ever they recommend.

  7. Sexual Harassment • 2 forms of SH, • quid pro quo • Creating an hostile work/study environment • Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, other verbal & physical conduct of a sexual nature by one in a position of power or influence constitutes quid pro quo sexual harassment

Sexual Harassment • Any unwelcome verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute hostile environment sexual harassment when such conduct is directed toward an individual because of her or his gender, is severe and/or pervasive, and has the purpose or effect of • (1) creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive academic or work environment or • (2) unreasonably interfering with another's academic performance or work. • Generally, a single sexual joke, offensive epithet, or request for a date does not constitute hostile environment sexual harassment; however, being subjected to such jokes, epithets, or requests repeatedly may constitute hostile environment sexual harassment.

  9. So, how should I act?? • Be your professional self in action and dress • Treat all students the same • Treat students how you would like to be treated • Demonstrate the behaviors you would like your students to show • Be on guard for being scammed, but use common sense and be compassionate

Behaviors Associated withEffective Teaching • Enthusiasm • Knowledge of subject matter • Organization and preparation • Sensitivity to student needs • Stimulus Variability • Repeating important concepts • Fairness • Openness • Appropriate use of humor • Humility • Inclusiveness • High standards

Creating a positive learning environment: getting to know your students and having them get to know each other. • First Day ice breakers as a way to help facilitate interaction between you and your students and students with each other. • Sets the tone for the semester, • Gets them ready for the idea that there will be interaction • Please take out the filled in colored cards in your packets
