  1. Fieldwork MOV 475

  2. Field Work – MOV 475 – 2 credits(pre-requisite - MOV 420) • 112 hours volunteer time • 8 hrs/week for 14 weeks (no hours during finals week) • 20hrs/week for 6 weeks during the spring semester • Class meetings are discussion based with assignments • Class TBA up until 1-2 weeks prior to semester start • Broad setting of interest – related to exercise science • Needs approval from Professor Crawley (if not on approved list)

  3. Finding a Fieldwork Site • This is your responsibility so start early! • 1-2 semesters prior • Polish resume & interview skills (Career Services) • Determine your references • Print Agency Agreement found online (Ex Sci website MOV 475 tab) – Take 2 copies with you • Know exactly what you are expected to learn/experience – the sites will ask • Review fieldwork agreement for requirements • Date to secure • December 1st (winter semester) • April 1st (spring semester) • August 1st (fall semester)

  4. Finding a Site • Approved Sites -- List of approved sites is on the exercise science webpage under current students, MOV 475 tab, then click sites. • http://gvsu.edu/exercisescience/exercise-science-students-2.htm • Need to turn in fieldwork agreement to Professor Crawley also found on the exercise science website under the current students, MOV 475 tab, click agreement. • This form can be turned into the main Move Sci office at anytime to be placed in my mailbox.

  5. New Site Approval Process • A New Site -- must have approval prior to completing an agreement • Need to provide a site website and supervisor credentials/experience to Professor Crawley (an email works fine) • Need to discuss/outline expectations for a learning experience – agreed upon by site supervisor & student • Very important to inform supervisor of their responsibilities to include: approve/discuss responsibilities, goals and objectives for student, do preliminary and final evaluations, meet every 3-4 weeks for interviews on field topics, etc • Complete fieldwork agreement once approved

  6. Other Considerations • Volunteer hours done outside of the fieldwork semester dates cannot be counted towards 475 • Health Compliance required for your internship will be completed during your registered fieldwork semester although, some sites may require the following components for fieldwork hours • Immunizations/TB test, Criminal Background Check, Drug Screening, Update CPR & First Aid Certifications and Flu Shot • Details of the requirements, including deadlines, testing procedures and screening protocols will be reviewed at the start of your MOV 475 semester as a part of a meeting lead by the GV health compliance officer.

  7. FAQs • Does the fieldwork/internship need to be within the semester dates? • Yes for fieldwork, however for internship, a1-2 week early start is acceptable. • Can I complete my fieldwork and internship at the same site? • Yes, however responsibilities must change with an internship and a plan must be presented and approved by Professor Peddie • Can I complete my fieldwork where I currently work? • In some cases, responsibilities need to differ and approval is needed by Professor Crawley

  8. Contacting Professor Crawley • Email is the best option: crawleam@gvsu.edu • Office is located in Mackinac Hall B-2-209 • Phone number is 616-331-8872 • Fax number is 616-331-8870
