  1. Power Supply System Impacts WBS 1.1.3 Power Supply System Level 3 Manager Nancy Grossman FNAL Dec 11, 2001

  2. Update of PS Needs • V109 has one more 6-3-120 (now 4 instead of 3) and runs at a higher current (1050 amps) • Requires another 500 KW supply to get the needed volts. • Have space for 1 more 500 KW in TSB. • Only remaining 500 KW PS are old Transrex’s, we are checking on getting an additional one (or other options, and checking the ramp). • V110 has one less EPB (now 5 instead of 6) and runs at a higher current (1400 amps) • Does not require an PS changes, will need to re-calculate the ramp. • Q109 is now two different quads (3Q120, 3Q60) which can run on one supply. • Two possible 3Q120’s (quads) in the carrier tunnel (unlined region) • Will need an additional PS each (there is room for them and we have spares) • Cable lengths and costs all need to be re-estimated.

  3. Update of Regulation Needs • Magnet Strings regulation requirements are looser with the new beam optics. • Could use less regulation than we have budgeted for, if this remains true. • Not clear if loosening the regulation is worth the money saved. • Don’t need to decide until FY2003. • Costed filters for all 7 strings, and BmLB systems for 3 strings, HOLEC transductors and special FNAL electronics for all 7 strings.

  4. Summary All these comments are very preliminary and Steve Hays will check in detail to see what are the final implications. • Main Changes: • Need extra 500 KW for V109. • Need 2 more quad PS if put quads in carrier tunnel. • PS regulation requirements are looser. • Cable lengths and numbers. • (need to re-do ramp calculations and cable calculations/costs) • Implications: • Can we get additional cable (500 kcm) or is it too late? Not sure if we will need it or not… • Additional costs are for 500 KW PS and quads and cables. Estimate several ten’s of thousands of dollars (FY$98). • Might be able to save money on PS regulation, but we would need to think long and hard before doing that.
