  1. You’ve already highlighted and noted your sources……… Now begin placing that information in your note cards using your own voice for paraphrase cards or “quotations” for direct quotes.

  2. Remember to write formally • Avoid first and second person, I, us, me, we…. • ……..YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU & your!! • Avoid cliché terms like: • in the nick of time • without a care in the world • for the life of me • without moving a muscle • without a doubt • to tell the truth

  3. Directions: On a note card, write a paraphrase of each of the following passages. Try not to look back at the original passage. • Of the more than 1000 bicycling deaths each year, three-fourths are school-age children. One study concluded that wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. In an accident, a bike helmet absorbs the shock and cushions the head. From “Bike Helmets: Unused Lifesavers,” Consumer Reports May 1990: 348.

  4. More SUB-TOPIC help • SUBTOPIC TITLE should always be from your list of 3-5 subtopics that you made during our last class. You are limited to that list only. • You will probably add/delete some of the sub-topics that you’ve chosen. • Only choose 3-5 sub topics for the body of your paper.

  5. Cell phones use in cars should be limited and/or illegal. • 1. TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS • 2 TEXTING WHILE DRIVING • 3. CURRENT LAWS • 4. CAR/PHONE TECHNOLOGY • 5. FUTURE LAWS

  6. 1. TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS 2. TEXTING /DRIVING 3. CURRENT LAWS 4. CAR/PHONE TECHNOLOGY 5. FUTURE LAWS My Subtopics Carson WEB Paraphrase FUTURE LAWS As cell phone technology saturates the United States, laws are changing to restrict cell phone use in cars. California is currently changing their laws regarding texting to give drivers who text, a mandatory $500 fine.

  7. Each Note: • …..should be anywhere from one sentence to a paragraph long. • …..use only the page number from the page that the note comes from. • Do not begin your note with, “This article is about.” Simply paraphrase with authority. Your citation allows this!!!

  8. Do not summarize your source! • Take several notes from each source about specific information provided in the source. • Each source may provide you with information for several of your subtopics. • After you have taken notes from that source, put it aside, or return it to the library. You already have the information you need and the citation information on the card and in your working bibliography page.

  9. Quotation Card Reminder • If you are using a quote from an article and it was spoken by someone other than the author, use the speaker’s name in the quote. Smith p. 45 Quotation MEDIA PRESSURES Child Psychologist, James Dobson says, “Teens are spending too much time learning from television and celebrities than from their families.”

  10. Each subtopic section must include: • Notes from at least TWO different sources. . . WHY? • Both paraphrases and quotations. . . WHY?
