  2. What is ECA? ECA is an international non-government organization incorporated in Switzerland. They are founded on the principles of respect for the Earth foster collaboration among global organizations take action and promote cooperation Are dedicated to global sustainability Slogan and Logo : Collaboration.   3. Vision To foster a sustainable global society on the principles of respect for the Earth and life in all of its diversity, economic and social justice, and a culture of peace and non-violence in accordance with the principals set out in the Earth Charter.

  4. Mission The convening of and facilitating cooperation among key leaders of the sustainable development movement, particularly those operating at the community and grassroots level, providing support through information, establishment of communication networks and new and organizational models to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

  5. History Environmental and development leaders, including Maurice Strong, joined together to launch the 1st Earth council in preparation for the U.N. Conference on Environment and Development in 1992, known today as the Rio Earth Summit.

  6. History continued… It supports many network of citizen groups - any organization that is committed to achieving the goals of the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development. From 1992 to 1998, the Earth Council set up more than 80 National Councils for Sustainable Development in developing countries. The purpose of these National Councils has been to focus on grassroots action to build the principles of sustainability into national development plans.

Program The China Initiative: ECA is trying to build links between Chinese sustainability efforts with other areas around the world because they want them to be able to share technical knowledge, fund resources, and deepen global understanding of best practices.They plan on spending at least 50 percent of its energies on sustainability efforts in China.ECA spent four weeks in Beijing and other parts in China to discuss collaborative working relationships with Chinese NGOs and leaders in trying to figure out a way for sustainable development and environment protection in China.

  8. Program Island Nations Climate and Oceans Program Island Nations is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and supporting sustainable development policies and practices that benefit small island states. Recognizing the traditional knowledge of island peoples, Island Nations will help them strengthen their communication capacity, identify appropriate technologies, and advance their social and economic well-being through programs that will promote sustainable energy, environmental protection, and disaster preparedness. This work will be done by teaming with technology, financial and organizational networks, and always in partnership with the leaders and peoples of the islands themselves.

  9. Success Story The ECA met with and helped Globe Village of China (GVB) – an environmental organization in Beijing – with a project called Green Olympic Action Plan. This plan was promoting collaboration with the Beijing Olympic Committee for the 2008 Games to ensure that activities were environmentally sound and that events actively promoted ecological awareness and environmental harmony. They helped with the funding and provided information and technology. This project was a success because this Olympic had one of the least environmental impacts that any Olympics has had.
