Inclusion and Diversity in Teacher Training for the XXI Century School

This proposal suggests a training course for teachers that focuses on inclusion, diversity, and improving basic competencies in the XXI century school.   2. School model for the XXI Century • We consider the educational inclusion as the reference model which must guide the XXI Century school. • We consider that inclusive schools must receive all students, despite their physical, functional, intellectual, social, sex, emotional, linguistic, cultural… characteristics • We assume the principle of zero exclusion for all students.

  3. Inclusive school model (cont.) • We consider differences as a value and opportunity for enriching all learnings. • The school must be based on the principle of collaboration and collaborative work of teachers, students, families and the community social organizations.

  4. Activity Proposal for the Annual Training Plan, 2009/2010 • Course name: “Inclusion, diversity and improvement of the basic competencies” • Justification: The assessment of the educational system, planned for October 2009, will open reflection and assessment processes in schools, which might start plans and actions for improving, in the inclusive school context, the acquisition of the eight basic competencies of all students’ diversity.

  5. Characteristics of the activity • Training method: Course • Addressed to: Teachers of Secondary Education • Vacancies: 20 • Selection criteria: Specially for teachers members of departments of orientation • Length: 20 hours • Scheduling: Academic year 2009/2010, 2nd term

  6. Objectives: • To know the suppositions and implications of the inclusive school model. • To reflect them on the organizational and curricula measures, for improving the basic competencies of all students’ diversity. • To know practical experiences and contributions about the assessment and improvement of the basic competencies from the point of view of the students’ diversity.

  7. Contents: • The inclusive model: one school and society for everybody • Implications of the competence training from the inclusive school approach. • To analyze the training practices according to the inclusive school model. • To improve the basic competencies according to the students’ diversity. • Organizational and curricula measures in order to plan and assess the basic competencies of the students with specific needs, who need educational support.
