Social Studies Curriculum • In high school, the focus for the Freshman and Sophomore years is Reading and Math—in preparation for state testing. • Most students won’t have a Social Studies class until their Sophomore year. • How do we prepare students for these classes and keep them involved in history?

  7. Supporting Social Studies • Read the newspaper with them • Watch the news with them • Talk about what is going on in the world • Talk about voting issues when it is voting time • Talk to them about the historical experiences you have lived through

  9. Science Curriculum • All Freshman must take one semester of Integrated Science • Curriculum matches 7th and 8th Grade Science Standards • Students will be taking Science AIMS in 8th Grade until further notice.

  12. Supporting Science • Review the days’ lessons every evening • Watch Science related programs • Discovery Health • Discovery Channel • Discuss current Science and technology advancements • Use questions that require more than an yes/no answer to help students develop their inquiry process

  14. 8th Grade Math Curriculum- Common Core Standards • The Number Sense (NS) -Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers. • Expressions and Equations (EE) -Work with radicals and integer exponents. -Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. -Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.

  15. 8th Grade Math Curriculum-Common Core Standards • Functions (F) -Define, evaluate, and compare functions. -Use functions to model relationships between quantities. • Geometry (G) -Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software. -Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. -Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.

  16. 8th Grade Math Curriculum • Statistics and Probability (SP) -Investigate patterns of association in data.

Supporting Math • Talk to your child and ask them how they feel about the math they are learning in class. • Encourage your student to ask for help while they are completing their class work. • Begin to familiarize yourself with the Common Core Standards for your child’s grade level. • Khan Academy • Engage New York is available on-line.

  19. 7th Grade Math Curriculum • Ratios and Proportionality (RP) -Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real world and mathematical problems. • Number Sense (NS) -Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions. • Expressions and Equations (EE) -Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.

Supporting Writing • Encourage your student to write • Be a proofreader for your student • Read your students’ final stories and essays • Share your own writing with your student • Discuss ways that you use writing in your job and everyday life • Give your student opportunities to help you write directions, lists, emails, letters, etc…

  28. Agendas • Students must have their agenda everyday. • Students must have their agenda signed every night. • Agendas are signed by teachers every day in every class. • Overall agenda checks are done by the homeroom teacher on Wednesday.

  30. Communication with Agendas and Responsibility Cards Check agendas and Responsibility Cards each night. Please look for notes in the agenda. Feel free to write notes for a teacher in the agenda. Email or call if you have additional questions or concerns. Responsibility Cards will need to be signed if your child receives an infraction code.
