John 13:31-33 • 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.

  3. John 13:34-35 • ’34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

  4. i. Embrace Love’s Priority • A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: • 1 Thessalonians 2:7 • Gentleness—love in action, being considerate, meeting the needs of others, allowing time for the other person to express themselves and be willing to learn.

  5. II. Engage Love’s Power • A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, • This is a choice of my will. It’s saying that “I choose to love you”

Escape Love’s Substitutes • A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. • 1) Sentimentalism: It’s this warm generic feeling of nostalgic longing for the past. • Psalm 149:1, Isaiah 42:10 • Jesus wants a hot, vibrant relationship with us right now!

  8. IV. Escape Love’s Substitutes • 2) Shallowism- This is where we are willing to love people but only to a certain point. • a love that will endure during difficult times, instead a shallow substitute. • 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

  9. IV. Escape Love’s Substitutes • 3) Sweetness • Niceness is not love! • Love is a powerful and willful choice that puts the interest of another person ahead of ourselves.

  10. IV. Escape Love’s Substitutes • 4) Selectiveness • James 2:1, 8-9 • And so the things that separate us in this world, these things don’t have any place in the church.

  11. IV. Escape Love’s Substitutes • 5) Service--Sometimes people will substitute love for acts of service. • Galatians 5:13

  12. v. Extend Love’s Impact • By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” • Our love, should be evident that people will know. • This is a product of the Holy Spirit and what He can do through the life of a believer
