Cladograms. Problems with traditional classification: Some animals fit into more than one category Ex. Dolphin – fish (lives in water) or mammal (warm blooded). Evolutionary Classification: Organisms grouped showing lines representing evolutionary descent (not just physical similarities).

  2. Problems with traditional classification: • Some animals fit into more than one category • Ex. Dolphin – fish (lives in water) or mammal (warm blooded)

  3. Evolutionary Classification: • Organisms grouped showing lines representing evolutionary descent (not just physical similarities)

  4. Cladograms: • Identifies new characteristics that show up as lineages evolve. • Ex:

  5. Genetic Similarities: • “Read” DNA/RNA and compare bewtween organisms • Molecular clocks: used to estimate when 2 species evolved independently • Compare location and amount of mutations in DNA
