  26. Nature of the Lord’s Work 1 Cor 15:58 The Work of the Church: A Mark That Matters Authority for the Lord’s Work Matt 7:21-23 • Stand firm • Let nothing move you • Always • Give yourselves fully to the • work of the Lord • Labor in the Lord is not in vain • Old Testament examples • Ex 26:30; Heb 8:5-6 • Scriptures thoroughly equip for • good work 2 Tim 3:16-17 • Do the Will of the Father • Matt 7:21-23 • Some work is of the devil • John 8:44 The Work of the church • Preach the gospel: Mark 16:15-16; Matt 28:19; Eph 3:10; 2 Tim 4:2 • Edify and teach the church members: Eph 4:12; Tit 2:1-15 • Benevolent work: Acts 2, 6, 11; 1 Cor 16:1-2; 2 Cor 8, 9; 1 Tim 5:9

  27. Acts 2; 6; & 11 • Acts 2:44-45 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. • Acts 6:1-4 . . . their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word." • Acts 11:28-30 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

  28. Acts 2; 6; & 11 • Acts 11:28-30 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

  29. 1 Cor 16:1-4 • Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. And when I come, whomever you approve by your letters I will send to bear your gift to Jerusalem.

  30. 2 Cor 8 & 9 2 Cor 8:3 For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, 2 Cor 8:5 5 And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God. • 2 Cor 8:10-12 And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago; but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may be a completion out of what you have. For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have. • 2 Cor 9:6-9 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: "HE HAS DISPERSED ABROAD, HE HAS GIVEN TO THE POOR; HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ENDURES FOREVER."

  31. 1 Tim 5:9-10 • Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.
