  2. Ladder Safety • Falls are a common cause of work-related injuries • Almost everyone has fallen at work at least once • Falls from ladders dramatically increases potential for serious injury

  3. Ladder Safety • Make sure the ladder is the correct load rating • Type III – light duty, load capacity of 200 lbs • Type II – medium duty, load capacity 225 lbs • Type I – heavy duty, load capacity of 250 lbs • Type IA – extra heavy duty, load capacity of 300 lbs

  4. Ladder Safety • The type of ladder you choose for a job should be based on: • Height of job • Equipment to be used • Site conditions • Location • Extent and duration of the job

  5. Ladder Safety • Do not climb ladders if you are not physically and mentally prepared to do so • Workers in medications that cause dizziness or drowsiness should never climb a ladder • Only one person should be on a ladder at a time • Barriers must be set up to prevent people from walking under a ladder, regardless of their head protection

Ladder Safety • Use the proper ladder for the job • Use a ladder that is the proper length for the job • Set up straight, single or extension ladders to be at an approximately 75 degree angle • Be sure all locks on extension ladders are properly engaged • Never place a ladder in front of a door that is not locked, blocked or guarded

Ladder Safety • Make sure metal ladders have slip resistant feet • Never use any ladders (metal, wood, or fiberglass) around power lines or electrical equipment • Keep your body centered between the rails of the ladder • Do not use the ladder for any purpose other than what it was intended for

  8. Ladder Safety • Do not step on the top step or bucket shelf • Do not attempt to climb or stand on the rear section of a step ladder • Never leave a raised ladder unattended • Tools and equipment should be carried up in a secure manner • Do not paint ladders as this may hide structural defects

  9. Ladder Safety • Set up barriers to prevent unauthorized people from walking up ladders • When carrying a ladder, hold the middle section to keep the ladder parallel to the ground • Never use ladders in strong winds

  10. Ladder Safety • Maintain three points of contact at all times: • Two hands and one foot • Two feet and one hand • Always wear slip resistant footwear • Always face the ladder when climbing up or down • Open stepladders fully and firmly lock both spreaders
