  2. Catherine Benincasa was born in 1347 and was the youngest of 25 children of a wealthy dyer of Siena. Where & When she was born

  3. At the age of six, she had a vision of Christ in his glory, surrounded by his saints. • After her vision she spent most of her time in prayer and meditation. Her parents were unhappy with this and wanted her to be more like other girls her age. What caused her to lead a religious life

  4. Eventually her parents gave in, at the age of sixteen Catherine joined the third order of St. Dominic, where she became A nurse, caring for patients with Leprosy and advanced cancer who other Nurses disliked to treat.

  5. People started to see Catherine as a person of wisdom and good judgement, and many people turned to her for spiritual advice. Catherine – An influential religious figure

  6. She persuaded many priests who were living in luxury to give away their goods and to live simply.

  7. At this time, the pope was living in France under the political control of the French king. Catherine persuaded him to move back to Rome . In 1376 Catherine became an ambassador for pope Gregory XI.

  9. She died in Rome at 1380 at the age of 33. Catherine died of a mysterious and painful illness that came over her with no notice. Her tomb is in the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome. When and how saint Catherine died

  10. St. Catherine is the patron saint of Europe and fire-fighters. • St. Catherine suffered much sickness during her lifetime, and is also the patron saint of sick people .

  11. Her patronage of fire-fighters has an interesting history: During her ecstasies, St. Catherine, at times fell into fires but her skin and clothes remained untouched by the flames • She is also the patron saint of nurses.
