Study Aim • Highlight future directions in assessment of mental health disorders in context of rehabilitation research. • Relevance • Most common psychiatric diagnoses in VA are depression, substance abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder/anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. • These conditions are readily measured with diagnostic interviews, psychological tests, and questionnaires. • Functional outcomes that can be assessed across disorders are an important area requiring development.

Methods • Reviewed assessment in mental health research, providing overview of symptom and diagnostic assessment. • Focused on measurement that can be applied across diagnostic groups and on functioning as key mental health outcome. • Reviewed International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and its implications for improving assessment.

  4. Results • Recommendations: • Incorporate measures that build on ICF conceptualization of functioning. • Expand use of technology to improve both validity and efficiency of assessments. • Complete validation analyses on assessments administered using computer. • Create database infrastructures to increase data security and research opportunities.

  5. Conclusions • Next directions: • Investigate relationship between subjective mental health measures and biological measures. • Use measures compatible with those needed at other organizations (Veterans Benefits Administration, Social Security Administration).
