  3. SUMMER 2016 RESULTS • Of the total signups for summer reading: • 614,874 were early learners and children • 97,242 were teens • 89,244 were adults Reading By Design | Summer 2017

LUNCH AT THE LIBRARY 2016 RESULTS • 139 libraries served meals • (34% increase over last year) • 203,593 lunches served • (43% increase over last year) • 60,238 snacks served • (103% increase over last year) Lunch at the Library is a project of the California Library Association and California Summer Meal Coalition. SUMMER IS CHANGING Increased awareness of: • Summer learning loss & the role libraries play in helping children maintain their skills. • The value of creativity and process-based learning & opportunities this provides for summer programming. • The knowledge that many who take part in summer reading are library regulars and book-lovers; the need for targeted outreach to those who do not participate. SUMMER IS CHANGING • What does “summer reading” mean to teens and how can programs evolve to meet the needs of teens in the community? • An increase in adult summer reading programs and leveraging summer programming to promote the library’s value to the community. • New directions: • Some programs renamed summer learning programs. • Enrolled summer camps in some public libraries. • Summer meal programs in some libraries. QUALITY INDICATORS • Signposts or checkpoints to help staff determine whether their program achieves a given principle. • Participation survey: now includes questions based on the indicators. • Statewide and local data on how Summer @ Your Library in California builds strong communities, provides opportunities for learning, celebrates reading and literacy, and is designed to reach and engage everyone. • Benchmark data you can access and measure each year.
