  2. The First Chariots • A small, two wheeled cart pulled by one, two, or four horses • Used as street carts and war at first, and made of wood • First chariot races were during the time of the Mycenaeans

  3. Types of Chariots • Chariots were made of wood, bone, ivory, bronze, and iron • Chariots were smaller than regular carts • Two horse chariot was called the biga • Four horse chariots were called quadriga • Both raced in the Olympics

  4. Biga • This is an example of the biga.

  5. Quadriga • This is an example of a quadriga.

  6. Olympics • Chariot were part of Olympics in 680 B.C. • Only wealthy people could afford a chariot and horses • Owners hired jockeys to drive horses • Women were allowed to enter horses, but couldn’t drive

  7. Hippodrome • The hippodrome was where the chariots raced • It was 600 yds long and 300 yds wide • It was a short distance outside city walls • Chariots raced for about seven miles • Six chariots raced at a time, painted six different colors • The colors wereblue,red, white,green,gold,orpurple
