  5. Diversity Reflection Exercise I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing I’d like to build the world a home And furnish it with love, Grow apple trees and honey bees and snow white turtle doves. I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, I’d like to hold it in my arms And keep it company. I’d like to see the world for once all standing hand in hand And hear it echo through the hills For peace throughout the land.

  6. How does ‘teaching the world to sing’ relate to the work we do here at the Cleveland Job Corps Center?

  7. “Ways that we “teach the world to sing at CJCC” • First: We are an equal opportunity employment organization. • Second: Our students come to Cleveland from many different states, bringing a variety of experiences to the CJCC World. • Third: We participate in community activities in many multi-cultural communities. • We allow student to come as they are with the possibility of changing and growing throughout their 2 year stay.

  8. WHAT IS DIVERSITY?

  9. “The complete mix of differences and similarities at all levels of the organization.

  10. TWO CATAGORIES FOR DEFINING DIFFERENCE IN DIVERSITY PRIMARY: These are the obvious differences that you can see via actions or physical appearance. SECONDARY: These are differences that may make-up a person character and the way they live.

  11. Primary and Secondary Dimensions of Diversity: PRIMARYSECONDARY Age Educational Background Ethnicity Geographic Location Gender Income Physical Ability Martial Status Race Military Experience Sexual Orientation Work Experience

  12. Many laws have been established to try and prevent discriminatory acts from happening to individuals based on differences.

  13. Laws and Regulations surrounding diversity & discrimination Civil Rights Act of 1964 -Makes it unlawful for employers or their supervisor to discriminate with respect to any condition of employment because of race, color, sex, religion or national origin.

  14. AGE • The age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 -Made it unlawful to discriminate on the basis of age in the case of applicants or employees over the age of 40 in any area of employment. Amendments in 1974 extended coverage to Governmental employers

  15. Additional Laws • Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 501) -Required Federal agencies in the executive branch of Government to develop affirmative action programs for hiring, placement and advancement of people with handicaps. • The American with Disabilities Act (ADA 1993) -Made it unlawful to discriminate as to any term of employment based on a disability.

  16. Are different styles of learning a form of diversity?

  17. Yes! For our students we have to adjust our program on many levels to accommodate various learning styles. Even with TABING we have different levels of testing taking.

  18. “If children can’t learn the way we teach, we must teach the way they learn” Unknown

  19. What happens when you are the minority in a workplace and you feel uncomfortable, but you like your job? How can understanding Diversity help you become adjusted?

  20. Keys to adjusting to be a minority in the workplace • Be confident about who you are and your values. • Give the situation a chance. Set a 3 month timeline before you quit. • Identify your own prejudices. “What issues or preconception do you bring to the table.” • Learn about the culture of the majority staff. It will make you more aware of whose around you. • Be yourself. Stay who you are. Don’t try to become the majority to fit in better.

  21. What does poor management of diversity cost the organization? • Lower Productivity/People do not feel appreciated or they are uncomfortable. • Recruiting-Have a constant turn over in employees • Retraining-We have to pay out to retrain new employees and train old employees because of poor management • Law suits • Poor morale • Departmental Conflicts

  22. What are some ways that you can promote diversity in you departments? • Encourage staff members to talk about who are they are. • Learn new things about different cultures and share them. • Stay aware of your language and use of slang/stereo types. • Don’t believe everything you see or hear in the media about a race or religion. Learn for yourself.

  23. Here are the 4 “A’s” to becoming culturally competent. • A1 = Awareness: Awareness of the differences in others (i.e. different religions, cultures, education, gender, etc.). • A2 = Acknowledgement: Acknowledge that you have pre-judged differences without experiencing them (i.e. having negative attitudes, beliefs or behaviors about differences in others without experiencing differences, etc.). • A3 = Action: Taking Action to experience differences (i.e. eating different foods, going to different churches, asking questions of others that will explain differences, etc.). • A4 = Acceptance: Allowing yourself to be accepting of differences in others, even if you do not agree or value these differences.

  24. “If we make an attempt to be fair in our everyday encounters, and we try to be respectful of each others differences, and we think about how miserable the world would be without differences.” We can accomplish diversity.

  25. THE PRESENTATION HAS ENDED THANK YOU PLEASE COMPLETE THE QUIZ ON THE CLASS PAGE AND THE EVALUATION AT THE END. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
