  1. Today in Chemistry You will Need: Pencil Acids and Bases Part 2(Picked up Yesterday) Acids and Bases Part 1 (Picked up last week) Colored Pencils (as needed) Textbook open to Periodic Table

  2. Chemistry Final Exam For those of you who wish to plan ahead: Final exam is 2 days Cumulative knowledge for the whole semester ½ page of notes, front side only, done by hand Dates: June 2nd and 3rd A periodic table and Lewis Dot Config will be provided for the test.

  3. Review The amount of space a substance takes up is its? In a chemical equation, the ________ are found on the right side. Why do two different size pieces of a substances have the same densities? What does the atomic mass tell you about the atomic structure? Which scientist is responsible creating the “Solar System” style model of the atom? What are the two liquids on the P.T.?

  4. Review What scientist believed the atom was a random assortment of particles? What was one problem with Dalton’s atomic theory? How many more bonds does Fluorine need to complete its outer shell? Why? How many shells does Sodium’s Bohr model contain? What is its electron configuration? What type of bond is NaOH? Why? What type of bond is ZnCl2? Why?

  5. Review How many atoms of Oxygen are needed for 2Pb(NO3)2? What slows down or stops a chemical reaction? What type of ions are more present in a acid? What is one characteristic acids have that bases do not share? What colors are associated with bases? What # represents the weakest Base? Acid?

  6. Getting Started A positively or negatively charged atom/molecule ION: pH Scale: Measures the # of H+ ions in a solution (Potential Hydrogen Ions) 7 ACID BASE 0-6.9 7.1-14 NEUTRAL

  7. Vocabulary H+ equals what kind of substance? Acid – Hydronium Ions OH- equals what kind of substance Base – Hydroxide Ions

  8. Characteristics of Acids

  9. Characteristics of Bases

  10. Venn Diagram Both Acids Bases

  11. Graphic Organizer pH

  12. Life Connections Questions # 7, 8 and 9 #7 found in textbook pg. 294 #8 Hyperlinks on class webpage #9 Hopefully from your Cornell Notes on acids and bases and your experience with the labs you should be able to answer – OTHERWISE – Hyperlinks on class webpage to help you.

  13. Suppose you have already compared the pH values of two substance using 0-14 pH paper. When would a follow-up test using 4.5-7.5 paper be most helpful? • When both sub. had a pH value of about 3 on the 0-14 paper • When both sub. had a pH value of about 6 on the 0-14 paper • When both sub. had a pH value of about 9 on the 0-14 paper • When on substance had a pH value of about 5 and the other had a pH value about 7 on the 0-14 paper.

  14. Priority List 1. Work on Acids and Bases Part 1 & Part 2 13- 25 – Review questions – Circle one answer for each #22 – has two answers #25 (NH4)2SO4 #24 “C” is listed twice – 2nd one should be a “D”

  15. Homework • Acids & Bases – Part 1 & 2 • Anything you still owe
