Bighton Area Fire Department / Livingston County Firefighter Academy • Once a year • Typically 20-35 students • Variety of departments represented (in county / out of county) • Most without previous training • End result state certification – Office of Firefigher Training • Medical training (2-3 months) • Firefighter academy (9 months)

  4. Basic Firefighter Academy Subject Areas • Firefighting “Basics” • Hazardous Materials “Operations” • Fire Prevention/Public Education • ICS/IMS • Vehicle Extrication • Emergency Vehicle Driving

  5. Driver Training Component • Through OFFT • Based on NFPA 1002 (Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications) • 16 hours • Program by VFIS • Laws / regulations • Vehicle equipment • Vehicle dynamics • Vehicle handling • Emergency driving • Driving simulator • Driving “rodeo” • ½ page on roadway safety!!! • Added 4-hour block

  6. Roadway Safety Module • Background and need • Terminology / Components of a “TTC” zone • Apparatus positioning • MMUTCD / TTC set-up • Scene lighting • High-Visibility Apparel & Markings • N.U.G. (18 Strategies) • Resources
