  1. The Shah of Iran By: Shavonna Corprew What was the Shah of Iran’s rule(s) in government? What was the reason(s) for his overthrow? How did his overthrow impact the people of Iran? How did his overthrow impact the United States?

  2. WHO IS THE SHAH? Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi October 26, 1919 – July 27, 1980 Ruler of Iran from September 16, 1941 until his overthrow during the Iranian Revolution on February 11, 1979 Second and last monarch of the House of Pahlavi (one of the great Iranian monarchies.) Came to power during WWII when Anglo-Soviet invasion forced his father to surrender

  3. WHAT WAS THE SHAH’S RULE(S) IN GOVERNMENT?AND WHY WAS HE OVERTHROWN? Like his father before him Reza Shah believed… • Wanted to continue a constitutional monarchy that his father had put in place. • Continued to introduce social, economical, and political reforms • Wanted to continue modernizing Iran • He was more concerned with modernizing the richer part of society and paid little attention to the peasants (This is one huge reason of the Iranian Revolution) • Was a secular Muslim, he had most support from the working class. • A lot of corrupt issues about him and his family. • Completely banned any political parties against him, during 1918 there was over 2,200 prisoners in jail for political demonstrations. (During the beginning of the Iranian Revolution the number increased rapidly) • He was hated the most by traditional Muslims who didn’t like his over-support with the west. • He was overthrown and then replaced by a radical man named Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini

  4. HOW DID HIS IMPACT AFFECT IRANIANS? After the Shahs overthrow by Khomeini the Iranians were put under a new set of standards to live by and a new government to live under. • Sheria law was put into place, meaning traditional Islamic garb was required for women to wear. • Made and Islamic constitution for Iran • Freedom of speech and press were allowed, as long as you didn’t speak out about your views on the government. • Mass executions and interrogations were held on previous members of the monarchy who hadn’t fled Iran fast enough. • Women’s rights were highly advocated for, employment rates of female workers increased rapidly. • Free education, developed more public schools • Was highly supportive of other races, and wanted to have unity between the Sunni and Shi Muslims. • Ordered people to ignore anyone who spoke of Democracy, citizens who protested were killed. • All of his beliefs were taught in schools.

  5. HOW DID HIS OVERTHROW AFFECT THE U.S.A? After the Shah was overthrown all ties to Iran were halted and strained…. • Standoff between Iran and America didn’t end until after Ronald Reagan’s administration. • Iranian Hostage Crisis: November 4, 1979 Iranian terrorists held 60 American soldiers hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. • Long period of Sanctions and Oil embargoes • War that lasted 8 years, didn’t end until Khomeini surrendered
