  3. Imagine that our country is under the threat of imminent nuclear attack. A person approaches you to make an independent decision concerning a nearby fallout shelter that can accommodate 6 people but has 12 people trying to get in. Based on the following information about the 12 people, which 6 would you choose to go in the shelter? • 40-year-old violinist, who is also suspected of being a narcotics dealer • 34-year-old male architect, who is thought to be homosexual • 26-year-old male lawyer • the lawyer’s 24-year-old wife, who has just been released from a mental • institution (they would like to go in together)

  4. a 73-year-old priest • a 34-year-old female prostitute, who was so successful she has been living off of her annuities for 5 years

  5. 20-year-old black militant • a 23-year-old female graduate student, who speaks publicly about the virtues of chastity • 28-year-old male physicist, who will enter the shelter only if he can bring his gun • a 30-year-old M.D., who is an outspoken bigot • a 12-year-old with mental retardation

  6. Prejudice • Hostile or negative attitude toward people in a distinguishable group, based solely on their membership in that group.

  7. Prejudice • Many aspects of your identity can cause you to become labeled and discriminated against. • Nationality • racial and ethnic identity • Gender • sexual orientation • Religion • Appearance • Weight • Disabilities • hair color • profession

  8. Stereotyping • To stereotype is to assign identical • characteristics to a member of a group, without taking into account how that individual may differ from other members of the group. Often stereotyping is merely a way to simplify how we look at the world - and we all do it to some extent.

  9. Discrimination • An unjustified negative or harmful action toward the members of a group simply because of their membership in that group. (Bond, Di Candia, and McKinnon)

  10. Stereotype Threat • The fear that one's behavior will confirm an existing stereotype of a group with which one identifies. • This fear may lead to an impairment of performance. Steele & Aronson, 1995
