  1. SAFE QUARTERS TEAM LEADER TRAINING 2009

  2. What is Friendship Home? • We are Lincoln’s ONLY comprehensive domestic violence shelter for women and children. • Last year we served 1400 women and children. • We have two emergency shelters, with 50 total beds, that are full every day of the year. • We offer a continuum of services from the moment a woman calls in through her stay and after she leaves Friendship Home. These services include advocacy, crisis counseling, safety planning, basic needs provision, women’s support groups, children's support groups, transitional housing.

  3. How does Safe Quarters help? • Safe Quarters is essential to funding our shelters. We rely on generous donations from the community to keep our doors open. • Not only does Safe Quarters raise money, but also awareness about the problem of domestic violence facing our entire community.

  4. Event Day – October 11 • Pick-up your materials at headquarters between 11am-1 pm. • Your materials will include: • 1 BIG orange bucket (for the team leader) • SMALL white buckets (for your team members) • T-Shirts to be worn by your team members • Box of informational envelopes • Snacks and water for your team members • Maps for your teammates

  5. Your Precinct Map • PLEASE look at your map prior to event day. Consider breaking your map out into manageable sections for each team member. • The following slide is an example of a precinct map. • Please stay INSIDE boundary lines. On bold boundary lines canvass ONLY the side of the street inside the line. Do not canvass the other side of the street, it will be canvassed by another team!

  6. Informational Envelope • Each teammate will receive a bag of informational envelopes. • Each home must receive an envelope!! Regardless if the person is home or not. • If the homeowner is not home please leave the envelope in the door jam. • The envelope contains Friendship Home information and also serves as a receipt for their donation.

  7. Safety • Please go in pairs visible to each other • NEVER enter a home • Be aware that 1 in 4 women report being a victim of domestic violence at one point in their life. • Do not enter apartment complexes that have one common door into central stairwells.

  8. Turning in your proceeds • Please sort and face money- place dollar bills and checks in the envelope provided in the orange bucket. • You DO NOT need to count collections! We have volunteers at the headquarters doing just that. • Return all proceeds between 2:30 and 6:00. All proceeds must be turned in before 6:00pm!

  9. For Event Day • Review your map, be aware of construction, public lands, churches, etc. • Set a meeting time and location with your group and exchange cell phone numbers. • Consider pairing up team members and dividing your precincts as suggested in your team leader packet. • Spread the word about Safe Quarters to your neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers.
