  2. Common eLearning support questions… “I’ve found a great video online which I’d like to show to my students...” What services are available for hosting/providing video? How can we show videos in Blackboard? “I’ve made a video I’d like to show to my students, but I want it to be available online. How do I do that?” elearning@manchester.ac.uk

  3. Why use video? • Institutional Objectives • Quality of learning materials • Student engagement • Video can be highly engaging • Can convey concepts which would otherwise be more difficult • Caters to different learning styles elearning@manchester.ac.uk

  4. What do you want to achieve? • Share a video of your own • Share a video you’ve found • Invite students to critique or discuss a video • Instruct students to review or answer questions about a video • Share videos made by your students elearning@manchester.ac.uk

  5. What makes video work? • Effective placement • Think about the context in which video is shown • Focus • Highlight section(s) of interest • Explain why students should watch the video • Engagement and activity • Video does not need to be entirely passive. Discuss, evaluate! elearning@manchester.ac.uk

  6. Embedding Video – the basics • Host your videos on the Video Library Service(stream.manchester.ac.uk) • Find other’s videos on YouTube, Vimeo, BoB etc etc • Copy and paste a snippet of HTML code into the Blackboard text editor orUse the YouTube mash-up in Blackboard elearning@manchester.ac.uk

  7. Embedding from the VLS • Copy this by clicking into the box then: • Right-click then left-click on ‘Copy’or • Press CTRL+C (for PC) or Command + C (for Mac)* Ensure the text is all selected when copying! elearning@manchester.ac.uk

  8. Embedding from the VLS You can do the following in any context where the Blackboard text editor is used. Switch to HTML mode Switch HTML mode off Paste the HTML code into the box(right click– ‘Paste’ or CTRL+V or Cmd+V for Mac) elearning@manchester.ac.uk

  15. Tips • Add context – how does it relate to the course? Is it required or optional? • For longer videos, consider identifying highlights. Use time references. (YouTube can specify start time. BoB allows you to create your own clips.) • If you require your students to watch a long video, give them plenty of time to do so and make clear that the entire video is required watching. elearning@manchester.ac.uk
