  1. S4 Revision Time • Now that you have finished your speaking … it is not over …yet! • With the help of this ppt you will be able to remember important tips for your Listening and Reading paper

  2. In the Exam • In both exams, you get 5 minutes to read through the paper • Make sure you read the questions carefully and work out what information you need to listen for • You don’t need to understand every word • Check how many marks are given in brackets for each question • Look out for any cognates but beware of ‘faux amis’ (false friends)

  3. Faux amis • A few of the more common ‘faux amis’: grand – big large - wide la journée – day le parking - car park la pièce - room, coin, play la cave – cellar joli – pretty la veste – acket mince – slim le médecin – doctor la monnaie – change le car – coach le crayon – pencil le pain - bread les affaires – business les baskets – trainers la place - square, seat, room

  4. Learn your numbers • Numbers are essential !!! You need for time, dates and prices …so learn them • Pay attention to : • deux / dix / douze • trois / treize • vingt et un / trente et un etc • cent / deux cents • quarante / quatre-vingts

  5. Linking words • Linking words are ESSENTIAL to get your answers right in the questions of P/N/P+N ( in both papers ) • Look for: • Addition : et, avec, aussi, ou, surtout • Showing contrast: mais, cependant, alors, par contre, quand même • Giving opinions : je pense que, je crois que, à mon avis, parce que

  6. Likes and dislikes • Make sure you recognise: • j’aime • je n’aime pas • je préfére • je déteste • And reasons, using parce que or puisque

  7. Negatives • Don’ t get confused with negatives: • ne … pas (not) • ne … jamais (never) • ne … que (only) • ne … plus (no longer / no more) • ne … personne (nobody) • ne … ni … ni (neither … nor … nor) • ne … rien (nothing)

  8. Questions,questions, questions qu’est-cequ’il y a? où? quand? quel/quelle? comment? It is very important that you recognise all question words qui/avec qui? combien (de)? pourquoi/pourquoi pas? est-ce que/qu’? qu’est-ce que/qu’?

  10. Opinions • You need to be able to recognise plenty of adjectives • Check adjectives for describing PERSONALITY ( always a favourite in the exam ) • Good bank of adjectives in Métro

  11. Vocabulary • Pay special attention to most difficult vocabulary on WEATHER / ENVIRONMENT / HOUSE CHORES / FURNITURE • But don’t understimate PLACES / FOOD AND DRINK / DIRECTIONS / SCHOOL • IT IS IMPORTANT that you learn vocabulary suggested by the exam board ( see specification AQA • http://store.aqa.org.uk/qual/pdf/AQA3651WSG.PDF

Listening-specific Tips (1) • You will hear each extract two or three times. • You do not necessarily need to answer in full sentences, but make sure that you include all the details you have been asked for. • The answer may not be explicitly stated in the recording - you may be asked about attitudes, feelings or to record a general comment. • Check that the answers you give make sense • Make sure that you answer the question that you have been asked! After writing an answer, go back and read the question again.

  13. Listening-specific Tips (2) • "quand?" is looking for a time or a date; "qui?" is looking for a person. • Even if you have understood the answer the first time, listen carefully when the extract is repeated to check your answer • You will not lose marks for incorrect spellings or grammar; just make sure that a French person could understand your answers. • Don't leave blanks. If you really can't understand what's been said, jot down a word or some of the words you've heard.
