Sustainable Management of Scarce Resources in the Coastal ZoneAbu Kir Bay, Alexandria M. El Raey; Samir Nasr and Omran Frihy
Resources • Physical • Tourism, Land and underwater Archeology, ecotourism • Agricultural, Food and fisheries • International road • Natural gas and Industrial harbor
Problems • Shortage of services for residential areas • Lack of institutional capability for monitoring and pollution control • Shortage of urban services, solid waste management and wastewater treatment and disposal facilities • Estuarine Sedimentation • Low awareness among population and local decision makers • High unemployment rates • Interference of land use • Marine industrial pollution • Water logging and water bogging • Fertile Soil removal • Climate change • Radioactive sediments
An overview of Abu Kir Bay and Lake Idku sediments and land units
Approach Planning an ICZM program through: • Monitoring by remote sensing and ground based techniques and identifying hot pollution spots. • Identifying and assessing changes in the area by high resolution imageries • Building and analysis of a GIS for the region (topography, layers of vegetation and types, wetland, aquaculture, archeology, residential, industrial installations, land based pollution sources…) • Putting forward an integrated coastal zone management plan for development and identifying suitable areas for tourism projects. • Carrying out a strategic environmental assessment of the plan. • Promoting and communicating the study as a pilot study that can be replicated at other similar areas along the coast.
