  1. Cancer How the cells divide How the cells spread By Morgan Fusca & Mackenzie Gillen

  2. What does the term “homo sapien” mean? • The word “homo” means man • The word “sapien” means intelligent • So, the term “homo sapien” means intelligent man

  3. Cancer Cells never stop reproducing • Normal cells continue to reproduce only to a certain point; cancer cells double when reproducing • example: they go from 1 cell, to 2, to 4, to 8, to 16, etc. • This picture shows how cancer cells keep on producing from a tumor

  4. Normal Cell The Difference in the Cells Cancer Cell (AP John Institute for Cancer Research)

  5. Normal Cell Cancer Cell The Difference in the Cells coninued.. (AP John Institute for Cancer Research)

  6. They don’t obey signals from other cells • Something in cancer cells defects the signaling between the cells • Because this happens, the cells don’t stop doubling

  7. Cancer cells don’t stick together • Cancer cells lose the molecules that are on their surfaces when they are infused with the tumor • These molecules that they lose are the ones that keep the cells in place

  8. The Growth Process • Cancer cells do not need a stimulator to indicate the “go ahead” for the cells to grow

  9. How does Cancer spread? • Cancer spreads through the following ways: • Through blood circulation • Local Spread • Through the lymphatic system

  10. Spreads through blood circulation • When in circulation, the cancer cell will try to attach to the surrounding cells • They also may try to stick to platelets, or “an irregular, disc-shaped element in the blood that assists in blood clotting”, and try and form clumps

  11. Spread through local spreading • The cancer moves to nearby body systems • Spreads through the tissues and continues to push its way through and travel through the body

  12. Through The Lymphatic System • Spreads similarly to the way • cancer spreads through the • blood stream • The cancer must first detach from the tumor and then find its way through

  13. Cancer in the World Today • Cancer is a worldwide devastation to many people and families • The statistics show how much our world is effected everyday all around us

  14. Mitosis • Single cell divides making identical cells each • Same number of chromosomes as the original cell • Stages

  15. Prophase • Thenuclear envelope splits • Forms chromatin • Condenses chromosomes

  16. Metaphase • Condensed chromosomes align before being separated

  17. Anaphase • Chromosomes split • Sister chromatids move away

  18. Telophase • Separatedchromosomes go to the other end • Nuclei forms around chromosomes

  19. Cytokinesis • The cytoplasm divides

  20. Stage 1 • Small and not stress worthy • Removable?

  21. Stage 2 • disease is a little worse • bigger but in the same spot

  22. Stage 3 • Cancer is a great deal bigger • Split into more tumors in same spot • Chance to grow into tissue

  23. Stage 4 • Metastatic cancer • What happens to these cells • If remains untreated..
