  1. The following slides have been provided by GCISD for Parents and Students regarding House Bill 5

  2. New Graduation Requirements For students entering high school during the 2014-2015 school year and beyond

  3. New High School Graduation Requirements Students entering Grade 9 in the 2014-2015 school year and thereafter shall enroll in the courses necessary to complete the curriculum requirements for the Foundation High School Program and the curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement.

  4. Foundation High School Program A student must earn at least 26 credits to complete the Foundation High School Program in GCISD. Pending Board Approval: • English language arts -four credits • Science--three credits • One credit must consist of Biology or AP Biology • Social studies--four credits • World Geography, World History,US History, • Government .5 credit/Economics .5 credit • Mathematics--three credits • Two of the credits must consist of Algebra I and Geometry. • Local GCISD decision regarding requiring Algebra II pending

Foundation High School Program • Languages other than English (LOTE)--two credits • any two levels in the same language • Computer Science I, II, or III are options • Physical Education--one credit • Professional Communications - .5 credit • Health - .5 credit • Fine Arts--one credit • Technology – one credit • 6 Electives

STEM Endorsement CTE Route A student may earn a STEM endorsement by completing the Foundation High School Program, including Algebra II, Chemistry, and Physics and: • A coherent sequence of courses for four or more credits in CTE that consist of at least two courses in the same cluster, including at least one advanced CTE course. The final course in the sequence must be selected from of the following CTE career clusters in STEM • Science • Technology • Engineering • Mathematics • Or

  7. STEM Endorsement Non CTE Route • Three credits in mathematics by successfully completing Algebra II and two additional mathematics courses for which Algebra II is a prerequisite or • Four credits in science by successfully completing Chemistry, Physics and two additional science courses.

  8. Business & Industry Endorsement CTE Route A student may earn a business and industry endorsement by completing the Foundation High School Program and: • Algebra II and • A coherent sequence of courses for four or more credits in CTE that consist of at least two courses in the same cluster, including at least one advanced CTE course, which includes any course that is the third or higher course in a sequence. The final course in the sequence must be selected from of the following CTE career clusters listed in the following: • Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources; or • Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications; or • Business Management and Administration; or • Finance; or • Hospitality and Tourism; or • Information Technology; or • Marketing; or • Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics; or

Business & Industry EndorsementNon CTE Route A student may earn a Business and Industry endorsement by completing the Foundation High School Program and • Algebra II and • Four English elective credits by selecting courses to include three levels in one of the following areas: • Advanced Journalism: Newspaper; or • Public Speaking; or • Debate; or • Advanced Journalism: Yearbook

Public Services Endorsement CTE Route A student may earn a Public Services Endorsement by completing the Foundation High School Program and: • Algebra II and • A coherent sequence of courses for four or more credits in CTE that consist of at least two courses in the same cluster, including at least one advanced CTE course. The final course in the sequence must be selected from of the following CTE career clusters listed in the following: • Education and Training • Health Science

Arts & Humanities Endorsement A student may earn an arts and humanities endorsement by completing the Foundation High School Program and: • Algebra II and • Five social studies courses or • Four levels of the same language in a language other than English or • Two levels of the same language in a language other than English and two levels of a different language in a language other than English or • Four levels of American Sign Language or • A coherent sequence of four credits by selecting courses from one or two categories or disciplines in fine arts

  12. Multidisciplinary Studies Endorsement A student may earn a Multidisciplinary Studies Endorsement by completing the Foundation High School Program and: • Algebra II and • Four advanced courses that prepare a student to enter the workforce successfully or postsecondary education without remediation from within one endorsement area or among endorsement areas that are not in a coherent sequence; or • Four credits in each of the four foundation subject areas to include English IV and Chemistry and/or Physics; or • Four credits in advanced placement or dual credit courses selected from English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Economics, LOTE or Fine Arts.

  13. Distinguished Level of Achievement A student may earn a distinguished level of achievement by successfully completing the curriculum requirements for the Foundation High School Program and the curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement, including four credits in science and four credits in mathematics to include Algebra II.

Performance Acknowledgments A student may earn a performance acknowledgment on the student's diploma and transcript for outstanding performance in a dual credit course by successfully completing: • At least 12 hours of college academic courses, including those taken for dual credit as part of the Texas core curriculum, and advanced technical credit courses, with a grade of the equivalent of 3.0 or higher on a scale of 4.0; or • An associate degree while in high school

  15. Performance Acknowledgements Other ways for students to earn a performance acknowledgement also include: • Completing two or more languages • For outstanding performance in a dual credit course, in bilingualism and biliteracy, on a college AP test; or on the PSAT, the ACT-Plan, the SAT, or the ACT; or • for earning a nationally or internationally recognized business or industry certification or license.  The performance acknowledgement earned will be noted on the student's diploma and transcript.

  21. House Bill 5 • There are new graduation requirements for student entering high school during the 2014-2015 school year and beyond. • A House Bill 5 Break out session will be in the library beginning at 7:45 – 8:15.

Athletics • High School athletics are very competitive. • Students who are not currently playing a sport either in middle school or on a competitive team should contact the appropriate coach prior to registering for that sport. • Contact information is on the “Athletics and Fine Arts Options” information sheet online on the Counselor’s website.

  24. Credits • Credits are recorded on the transcript at the end of each semester. • Class rank is calculated in September, February and June. • Credits are awarded on a semester by semester basis. If a student fails a required course for the semester they must retakethe semester of that course, or regain the credit by making 70 or higher on a credit by exam. .

Grade Point Average (GPA) • A student makes a grade of 100 • Regular 5.0 grade points • Pre-AP 6.0 grade points • AP 6.25 grade points • Not all students will graduate in the 10% of the class but, 85% CHHS graduates pursue post-secondary education. There is a college for you even if your not in the top 10%!

  27. To be promoted Students need a total of 6 credits at the end of the freshman year. Basically , that means passing 6 classes first semester and 6 classes second semester. Remember that a student must be in attendance 90% of school days in order to earn credit. “Seat time” may be needed to regain credit lost for attendance.

STAAR State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness The class of 2018 will need to be successful on the following assessments to meet graduation requirements. • English I-II • Algebra I • Biology • US History STAAR assessments are course specific as opposed to TAKS which assessed comprehensive grade level content.   29. Pre-AP/AP Classes designed to prepare students for the entry into Advanced Placement (AP) meet the unique needs of qualified students. Basic content is the same as the regular course, but instruction allows for more in-depth and accelerated pacing. Preparation time (outside of school) is estimated to be 1- 1 ½ hours per class period.

Requirements for GT Programs (* If previously qualified, your student will STILL qualify) Minimum score of 125 on any one of the following aptitude measures: • Verbal • Nonverbal • Quantitative Minimum score of 95th percentile on any one of the following achievement measures: • Reading • Social Studies • Science • Mathematics Must meet two of the three following criteria • Minimum of 90 GPA in the previous semester • Minimum of 18 on the Student Self-Assessment • Minimum of 60 on 2 Teacher Checklists

  33. Off Campus Classes • Some courses are offered at Grapevine High School and the GCISD Swim Center. • A shuttle is provided by the district. Please be aware of signing up for GHS classes (designated by GHS on registration sheet). • Gymnastics(Must provide own transportation)

Hints for Course Selection • Choose classes that will challenge, but not overwhelm you. • Gains in GPA and class rank come from a combination of challenging courses AND good grades. • Map out a time management plan identifying preparation time for classes, time requirements for extracurricular activities and free time.

Skyward Online Arena Scheduling • A new scheduling process where students will create their own class schedule in Skyward based on courses they request in February. • Online arena scheduling will allow parents to be more actively involved in their student’s schedule. • Students will know their unofficial schedule for 9th grade by the end of this school year.

  38. Online Arena Scheduling Steps Step 1: CHHS counselors meet with 8th grade students to go over course requests for next year. Feb 11: HMS Feb 12: CMS Feb 13: GMS Feb 15: Parent follow up Q&A 9:00 AM PDEC Feb 18: House Bill 5 Information – CMS PTA meeting Students can enter and change course requests on Skyward until February 26th.

  39. Online Arena Scheduling Cont. • Step 2: May 5-9 - 8th grade students log back into Skyward Student Access to build their 9th grade schedule. The scheduling window opens at 7:00 a.m. on May 5 and closes at midnight on May 9. Students may build their schedule from home or can use a computer at school.
