2014-2015. SmartDrive History. Started in 2004 by Delmarva Broadcasting Company – home to 12 radio stations in the Delmarva peninsula – in response to a rash of teen fatalities. Some of which hit close to home. Debuted in 16 Delaware high schools in the 2005-2006 academic year.

  2. SmartDrive History • Started in 2004 by Delmarva Broadcasting Company – home to 12 radio stations in the Delmarva peninsula – in response to a rash of teen fatalities. Some of which hit close to home. • Debuted in 16 Delaware high schools in the 2005-2006 academic year. • Designed to work hand in hand with Driver Ed, Highway Safety and parents to create safer, smarter drivers.

  3. Our Mission Statement To reduce loss of life and property in senseless motor vehicle crashes through intensive and interactive defensive driving skill development.

Statistics • 128 High Schools • Nearly all of Delaware’s schools • 30% of Maryland’s high schools • Emergent program serving 14 high schools in Delaware, Chester, and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania • Wilmington University (SmartDriveU.org) • 9,401 students in the classic program in 2013-2014 • 14,351 students in the Distraction program 2012-2014 • 474 students in Skills program in 2012-2014 • 12,000 reached by assemblies • 30,000 parents reached annually • 181 events in 2013-2014

SmartDrive Classic Program • A free, online certified defensive driving course offered in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania through schools and community partners features videos, games, and Q & A. Designed to complement -- not replace --driver educationand parent training. • Three mandatory main modules • The Perfect 10 to a Perfect Ride • The 4 A’s: Alcohol, Awareness, Aggression and Accidents • Mastering the Driving Challenge • Bonus modules addressing DUI, speeding, seatbelts, distracted driving, drowsy driving, aggression, pedestrian, and motorcycle safety • Incentivized • Insurance discount (Delaware drivers, Pa and Md at carrier discretion) • SmartDrive College scholarship $4,000 (one per region) • One winner per school

  11. A natural progression of SmartDrive is SmartSkills added 2011-2012. The “hands on” component taught by driving professionals such as police officers, SmartSkills teaches young drivers collision avoidance, parallel parking, and skid control. SmartSkills “completes us”.

Prom and Graduation programs • Drive Smart Don’t Break Your Mama’s Heart • A Valentine’s event in which students sign and wear red hearts pledging to “Drive Smart” • DWI – Driving with Intelligence • Forty minute assembly/workshop including law enforcement presentation and hands on activity. DWI addresses timely issues such as DUI, speeding, distracted driving, and drowsy driving. • Pre-prom Assemblies • Customized for each school’s unique needs • SmartDrive PROMise • Students sign the PROMise to drive safely, wear seatbelts, never drive impaired or distracted during Prom and Graduation. • Schools with the highest percentage of responses win Prom or After Prom money
