  1. Using social networking to develop trainees teachers’ subject knowledge of children’s literature and the importance of reading for pleasure and development of comprehension skills Alison Baker, Primary PGCE, University of East London

  2. Background • The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. (DfE, 2013)

  3. Goodreads 1 • In the past, we asked trainees to present a verbal book review to their group • Many trainees would stick with a book that they knew from childhood, or to the “blockbusters” • In discussion with trainees, they were often unfamiliar with books children are currently reading, and those used in schemes such as CLPE’s Power of Reading

  4. Goodreads 2 • I read an article by Professor Tara Brabazon at the University of Brighton, where she discussed her search for an appropriate online tool inspire her undergraduate students to read more widely. In March 2011 she was exploring the use of Goodreads • Goodreads is a social networking site for readers. Readers can add books to a virtual bookshelf, can read other users’ reviews and comment on them, and there is a facility to create discussion boards

  5. PGCE Induction wiki • I asked trainees to join Goodreads, connect to me and read and review three children’s books as part of the Induction • They were given a list of suggested authors and genres- but with the understanding that they can read beyond this • Would you like to guess the most reviewed book, and the most reviewed author by our trainees?

  6. Student satisfaction • Most have enjoyed completing the task- to read and review at least 12 books • Most have read and reviewed more than 12 • They have recommended books to me, and to fellow trainees • An example of a review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/314802378

  7. Impact of social networking • Trainees have enjoyed reading other trainees’ reviews • “It is useful to have everything in one place” • “I’ve discovered books I wouldn’t have otherwise” • Previous trainees still use the site to review books and to save onto virtual bookshelves
